Coupled budgets in a 250 g envelope#

In a PocketQube (, )[1] or a CubeSat (, )[2], every engineering budget is tightly coupled to the others[3]:

  • Mass ↔ Orbital lifetime: Lowering spacecraft mass increases the and shortens orbital lifetime, helping meet the five-year deorbit rule at but reducing thermal capacitance .
  • Power ↔ Link & Data volume: Body-mounted solar cells on a tumbling generate orbit-average power[4]. Running a DC ( RF) UHF transmitter for of the orbit consumes mean power—nearly of the entire energy budget.
